Inter-school STEM Tournament
CISC_Kyiv hosted the First inter-school tournament on natural sciences “STEM at school”.
How can we cultivate the children’s interest towards natural sciences?
How do we teach them to apply in practice the theoretical knowledge they obtained?
STEM is a new educational technology uniting several disciplines, and is also an instrument for development of critical thinking, research skills and teamwork. With the purpose of popularising STEM disciplines in Ukraine, on March 16, 2017, Creative International School for Children hosted the First inter-school new-type Tournament on natural sciences “STEM at school”.
Teams of senior students from eight leading Kyiv schools participated in the event. The framework of the Tournament involves passing 12 tours on different fields of science: mathematics, computer and information studies, chemistry, physics, biology, logic, mythology, geography. And the skills of XXI century, such as: ability to work in a team, to think creatively and comprehensively, proved to be the most vital for achieving the best results. The competition among senior students reached the highest levels, the emotions, enthusiasm and intellectual work left no viewers or participants indifferent. The contests had the form of blitz-questions on subjects of STEM field, which turned out to be not as easy to answer as it seemed. The teams had to apply all the knowledge and critical thinking skills in order to find the answers.
“Such experience is invaluable for a child. It is entirely possible that participation in the Tournament will give a boost to development of future distinguished scientists or researchers who would present Ukraine on the global intellectual arena. We sincerely strive for the children to obtain modern and up-to-date knowledge and skills. The Tournament is aimed at motivation of teenagers for studying and advancement of knowledge in the field of natural sciences, and at development of STEM activities in Ukrainian schools”, – says Ms. Oksana Bukovska, Director of Creative International School for Children.
